Jimmy Brown, mentor to media mogul Ted Turner, dies

<p>Jimmy Brown, who media mogul Ted Turner called his second father, has died. He was 79.</p><p>Brown helped raise Turner from the age of 9 when Turners family moved to Savannah, and the two became lifelong friends. Brown was best man at Turners 1991 wedding to actress Jane Fonda.</p><p>Brown died of a heart attack Sunday at his home in Tallahassee, Fla.</p><p>He was my best friend and mentor, said Turner, chairman of Turner Enterprises and founder of CNN. He helped raise me and was a second father to me and was like a second father to my children.</p><p>Brown introduced Turner to sailing. The two sailed thousands of miles together, including a trans-Atlantic voyage, and Turner would go on to win the Americas Cup.</p><p>I learned a lot about tolerance and integration and segregation and race relations from Jimmy, he said. He was an inspiration to me and will be until the day I die.</p><p>Survivors include a brother, John M. Brown of Colorado Springs, Colo.</p><p>The funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday in Lamont, Fla., followed by the graveside service Saturday in Savannah.</p>
