Pollack still undecided, Davis says hes staying

By The Associated Press

Georgia defensive end David Pollack weighed the pros and cons, consulted with his family and an NFL draft advisory board, then finally decided whether to stay for his senior season.

But just a few days ago, something made him change his mind.

Its actually gotten more confusing, Pollack said Wednesday. I thought I had my mind made up pretty good, but it got changed a little bit. Now I dont know.

Pollack, a second-team All-American, wouldnt admit which way he was leaning and wouldnt say what made him rethink his decision, but a 34-13 loss to LSU in the Southeastern Conference game earlier this month might have something to do with it.

He also struggled a bit after he set the school record with 14 sacks and made the All-America first team last season. In 2003, he has 4 1/2 sacks, with the Capital One Bowl against No. 12 Purdue (9-3) on Jan. 1 remaining on the schedule.

Despite the drop in production, Pollack still made first-team All-SEC, besides the national honors.

Gratified, yes. Surprised, yes, he said. I didnt think Id make anything.

He certainly made a good case for leaving early.

Its your future, he said. A lot of people think if you leave, its for money. Thats not the whole decision. Its a new competition, its new faces, its a new atmosphere.

Hes been told that he would be a first-round pick, but if Pollack returns, the No. 11 Bulldogs (10-3) likely would be near the top of most preseason polls for 2004. Their depth chart for the bowl has only seven seniors, and the defense, which is ranked fourth in yards allowed in Division I-A, lists only three.

Free safety Thomas Davis, a redshirt sophomore whos eligible for the draft, said he never considered leaving early, so hell be back. Hes trying to recruit Pollack and rover Sean Jones to join him.

Jones also is undecided.

I want them to come back so we can make a run at the national championship, Davis said. Were going to need all those guys back in order to do so.

Quarterback David Greene, another junior who plans to return, lives with Pollack in an off-campus apartment, but even he has little insight into what Pollack might do.

Right now, I have no clue, Greene said. Three or four days ago, I pretty much knew what he was doing, but not now. I guess it has to be people talking to him.

Coach Mark Richt already met with the juniors as a group about their futures, basically letting them know how much they meant to the coaching staff. Thats something he hasnt done in the past, but with the changing landscape in college football, it probably is a necessary part of running a program.

Youve got to be proactive, Richt said. I think it was good for them to know that we care about them, and we want whats best for them, and were excited about what can happen in the future.

Your senior year is when you create most of your memories.

Thats something tight end Ben Watson already understands. Last season, after Georgia beat Florida State in the Sugar Bowl, he entered the draft for a day before removing his name.

As a senior, he brought a video camera with him to all team functions, a way to document his final season.

Basically, its a decision theyve got to make on their own, he said. You really cant look at somebody elses situation. That decision is between you, your family and God.
