By by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - A transportation study is underway for Banks, Franklin and Jackson counties - and public information meetings are scheduled next week in all three counties.

Each county has contributed financially to the study which will address the transportation challenges they now face and expect to face in the future.

"The transportation study is underway," explained Georgia Department of Transporation (GDOT) District Engineer Todd Long. "Transportation planners and engineers will consider the transportation systems available in the area now, as well as future needs of these four rapidly growing counties.

"Recommendations will be made for transportation improvements that may include widening roadways, improving intersections, and using advanced technologies that can help traffic move more efficiently," Log added. "Transit, bicyclist and pedestrian needs will also be included in the study."

Next week, public information meetings will be held in each county from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Transportation Planners and Engineers will make a presentation about the transportation study. There will be a time for questions, answers and public input.

The schedule for the meetings is as follows:

* The Jackson County Meeting will be held Tuesday, December 9, at the Jackson County Courthouse in the Grand Jury Room on Washington Street in Jefferson .

* The Franklin County meeting will be held Wednesday, December 10, at the Franklin County Commissioner's Office located on Athens Street in Carnesville .

* The Banks County meeting will be held Thursday, December 11, at Banks County High School on US 441 in Homer.

A second round of meetings will be held in early 2004 to present recommendations from the study.
