GAINESVILLE - Confirmed cases of the flu were detected at Northeast Georgia Medical Center over the weekend, hospital officials said Tuesday.
Approximately 200 patients with flu-like symptoms were seen at Quick Care, the urgent care center of Northeast Georgia Health System, from Friday to Monday. About 600 patients with flu-like symptoms were seen at the Medical Center's main campus and Lanier Park campus emergency departments during the same time period.
Medical Center officials say almost all of the patients seen have been treated and released; only two patients have been admitted.
Symptoms seen in the Medical Center's emergency departments and Quick Care include high fever, coughing, nausea, congestion and sneezing. Other flu symptoms include prominent headaches and severe general aches, long-term weakness and fatigue (up to two to three weeks), extreme exhaustion and chest discomfort.
PREVENTION TIPS
To prevent the spread of the flu, take the following precautions: cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze; wash your hands frequently with soap and water, especially after contact with your nose or mouth; if possible, keep patients with the flu separated from family members, such as using a private bathroom and bedroom.
Officials at the Medical Center say if you have not received a flu vaccination, it is not too late. Check with your primary care practitioner or local health clinic for availability. The Neighborhood Healthcare Centers of Northeast Georgia Health System are currently out of the vaccine - as have several health departments in northeast Georgia.
