ATLANTA - Relief pitcher Antonio Alfonseca reached terms on a one-year contract with the Atlanta Braves today. Details were not disclosed.
The 31-year-old Alfonseca won three and lost one game last season and had a 5.83 E-R-A in 60 games with the Chicago Cubs. In 2000, the right-hander earned the National League Rolaids Relief Award with the Florida Marlins, leading the league with 45 saves in 49 chances.
In parts of seven seasons, Alfonseca has a record of 23-and-30 with a 4.11 E-R-A and 121 saves in 400 appearances. He signed with the Montreal Expos as a non-drafted free agent in 1989 and was selected by the Florida Marlins in the 1993 Rule 5 draft.
The Marlins traded Alfonseca and Matt Clement to the Cubs on March 27th, 2002, in exchange for pitchers Julian Tavarez, Jose Cueto, Dontrelle Willis and catcher Ryan Jorgensen.
