Permar, longtime island journalist and publisher, dies

<p>Elise May Johns Permar, owner and publisher of The Islander weekly newspaper in Glynn County, has died. She was 85.</p><p>Permar died Sunday following a long illness. She was a journalist for about 40 years and had lived on St. Simons Island since 1955.</p><p>Permar began her career by working as a stringer for Womens Wear Daily, then became society editor for The Brunswick News. Permar established The Islander in 1972. The independent weekly has about 8,000 readers.</p><p>In addition to being owner and publisher, she wrote its Back Talk editorial column, and reported on issues involving county and city government, as well as the county Board of Education, until her death.</p><p>Under her guidance, the newspaper has earned 14 awards from the Georgia Press Association for its news coverage, editorials and advertising.</p><p>Permars youngest son, Matthew Permar of St. Simons Island, will succeed his mother as publisher of the family business.</p><p>Permars daughter, Pamela Permar Shierling of Waverly, who is the papers managing editor and advertising manager, described her mother as a role model as a journalist and business owner.</p><p>She was a woman in journalism when there were very few women in that profession, Shierling said. It wasnt easy back them. But she didnt back down from anyone. She has left some very big shoes to fill.</p><p>Permar was active in many civic organizations over the years, including most recently Networks of the Golden Isles, which is a group of small business owners. She also was a member of Christ Church.</p><p>Other survivors include her eldest son, Andrew J. Permar of Watkinsville, and two grandchildren.</p><p>The funeral was held Tuesday at Christ Church on St. Simons Island.</p>
