On the way out of the locker room, Bruce Smith stopped to give Hue Jackson a pat on the head.

Hes the man today, Smith said. Hes the man.

More specifically, the man who took much of Steve Spurriers job for 24 hours and churned out a victory.

The Washington Redskins offensive coordinator gave the key motivational speech Saturday night, then took over the play-calling Sunday in a 27-20 victory over the Seattle Seahawks that broke a four-game losing streak.

I give Coach all the credit in the world, Jackson said. He said, You take a run at it and see what happens.

What happened was an offensive game plan that seemed to have more rhythm, although it helped that Seattle didnt blitz the Redskins the way other teams have. Patrick Ramsey threw two touchdown passes and wasnt sacked for the first time all season, while fullback Rock Cartwright ran for a career-high 81 yards.

Maybe Im struggling calling plays right now. Shoot, its not working as well as it should, said Spurrier, who owes much of his reputation as an offensive genius to his play-calling. He asked to do it this week and I said OK. ... If I have to bench the play-caller, then I can do that. I benched myself a little bit.

But Spurrier made the two biggest calls himself. He suggested the game-winning play: a lateral to receiver Rod Gardner, who threw a 10-yard pass to a wide-open Trung Canidate with 1:57 to play. Spurrier also decided to go for a fourth-and-inches at his own 25 on the game-winning drive with the score tied.

When youve lost four in a row, Spurrier said, you dont have to play too conservatively or too careful.

The victory will calm _ at least for a week _ the turmoil surrounding Spurriers future. Spurrier and owner Dan Snyder have been criticized in the national media recently for the downturn of the Redskins (4-5).

We have been killed in the papers, said receiver Laveranues Coles, who saved a touchdown by forcing a fumble after a first-half interception. You get to a point where youve got nothing to lose. You just go wide open and let it all hang out.

Seattle drove for a chance to tie after Gardners touchdown pass, but Fred Smoot intercepted a bobbled pass by Darrell Jackson inside Washingtons 30 with 39 seconds remaining.

The Seahawks (6-3) blew a 14-3 first-half lead, fell to 1-3 on the road and appeared to outthink themselves when it came to how to beat the Redskins. Washington had allowed an NFL-high 29 sacks entering the game because it couldnt stop the blitz, but the Seahawks decided to bluff the blitz rather than actually do it.

We hit him a couple of times and got to him a little bit, but not like other teams have done, Seattle coach Mike Holmgren said. I think the teams are just willing to sell out on defense in the blitz packages, and we were unwilling to do that.

Holmgren said he didnt question his strategy, and that it wouldnt have mattered if his offense had played better.

Meanwhile, Coles was the on-field catalyst for the Redskins. He caught five passes for 125 yards and a touchdown, and made the play that changed the momentum after an embarrassing start.

With the Redskins trailing 14-3 early in the second quarter, Damien Robinson intercepted a pass and ran 26 yards down the sideline toward an apparent touchdown. Coles caught him from behind, stripped the ball and Randy Thomas fell on it for a touchback.

Given a second chance, Washington drove 80 yards and scored when Coles made another outstanding play _ a tiptoe catch at the back of the end zone that made the score 14-10.

Notes:@ Smith did not start for the second straight week, but he got more playing time and had one sack to move within a half-sack of tying Reggie Whites all-time record. ... The Redskins committed a season-low four penalties. ... Washington S Matt Bowen left the game early with a concussion.
