<p>The Atlanta Braves claimed outfielder Gary Matthews Jr. Monday off waivers from the San Diego Padres.</p><p>Matthews, whose father played 16 major league seasons including 1977-80 with the Braves, hit .271 with four home runs, 22 RBI and 12 stolen bases in 103 games for San Diego. The Padres claimed him off waivers on May 23 from Baltimore, where he hit .204 with two homers and 20 RBI in 41 games.</p><p>Matthews, 29, was a 13th-round selection of the Padres in 1993. He also has played for the Cubs, Pirates and Mets. Over five major-league seasons, Matthews has averaged .241 and had 31 home runs and 145 RBI in 510 games.</p>
