HOOVER, ALABAMA - About 100 Army reservists based in Hoover, members of the 87th Division Army Reserve, were activated this week and have reported for duty.
Several hundred members of the 87th were activated Monday and left Thursday for Fort Benning, Ga., where they will be processed onto active duty, said Col. Larry Johnston, chief of staff for the division.
Most of the local troops will return Monday to division headquarters in Hoover, where they will be stationed.
Their job is to prepare other Army Reserve and National Guard units in the Southeast for mobilization and deployment, including verification that soldiers' medical and personnel records are updated and that they have proper equipment and training.
Those activated this week will remain on active duty for up to a year, Johnston said.
