DOERUN - A south Georgia man drowned Wednesday after the john-boat he was using to recover a drifting fishing boat in a farm pond started taking on water.
Larry Donnell Henry, 39, of Doerun was found at the bottom of the pond about 15 feet from shore after several hours of searching by volunteers.
Authorities at the scene said the fishing boat had drifted away from the bank when its supporting rope snapped. The boat Henry used to retrieve it did not have a drain plug, Colquitt County Coroner John Vickers said.
Colquitt County investigator Shannon Hart said Darren and Willie Bryant of Albany, who were with Henry, said the boat started filling up with water, and Henry went under before he could make it back.
