WASHINGTON - A Lincoln County sheriff's deputy, looking for a lost 71-year-old man in the rain Tuesday night, accidentally struck and killed him with his patrol car.
A woman had asked the officer, Leonard Newman, 26, to check on James Staples and his seven-year-old grandson, after she had given the two a ride home when Staples drove his truck off the side of the road earlier in the day, Sheriff Edwin Bentley said.
Staples and his grandson apparently were making a trip between their cabin and the truck in a golf cart when it stalled in the middle of the road.
Newman's patrol car hit the cart, which didn't have any lights, from behind. The boy was standing by the side of the road at the time, said authorities.
At first, Newman thought he had hit several deer, Bentley said.
No charges were filed against Newman. Bentley said he doesn't expect any disciplinary action to be taken against the officer.
