THOMASVILLE - A 7-year-old died after being mauled by a Great Dane as he visited the home of a relative Thursday, authorities said.
Jeremy Beckwith had head and neck injuries, said Lt. Tim Watkins, chief investigator with the Thomas County Sheriff's Department.
A man who lives near the site of the mauling saw the boy in the mouth of the Great Dane, which was shaking him, according to Pat Smith, Thomasville-Thomas County Humane Society animal shelter executive director.
Two other dogs were with the Great Dane, but it was not known if the other two were involved in the attack. ``They were in the owner's yard,'' Smith said. ``They were not confined.''
All three dogs were being held at the animal shelter. The Great Dane will be euthanized at the owner's request. Watkins said the sheriff's department has not received complaints about the dogs.
Smith, however, said the humane society received a complaint several months ago about the Great Dane running at large.
