802nd heads for Fort Stewart, points beyond

GAINESVILLE - For the first time in its existance, the 802nd Ordnance Company, an Army Reserve unit based in Gainesville has been called into active duty.

Troops and equipment rolled out of town Sunday morning on their way to Fort Stewart to await orders.

Company Commander Lt. Tom Williams of Atlanta said it was a day to remember for everyone.

"It's a big day for the unit, for the familes and a day I think we'll all remember," Williams said.

About 120 soldiers - including three Vietnam veterans and about 25 Desert Storm veterans - make up the unit.

Specialist Kimberly Davis of Austell said she is ready to do whatever it takes to get back home.

"I just want to go wherever they send, do the job and come back safely to my family," Davis said. "But I'm ready to serve my country any way I'm needed."

However, Lt. Williams said not he has been told what lies beyond Fort Stewart for the unit.

"Hopefully they'll tell us as soon as possible where our final destination is," He said. "But it could be that we don't know and they just put us on a plane headed overseas and where it lands is where we go."

But Williams said he wouldn't want to go with any other unit.

"I'm happy to go with them and could't think of another unit would want to go overseas with or deploy with," he said.

The unit is in charge of destribution of ammunition for units on the front lines.
