Dr. J, Spike Lee among Trumpet honorees

ATLANTA - National Basketball Association Hall of Famer Julius Erving and film director Spike Lee were among honorees at the 2003 Trumpet Awards, recognizing black leaders in the fields of entertainment, sports, politics and journalism. <br> <br> The R&B group Destiny&#39;s Child, recognized for special achievement in music, and actress Pam Grier, special achievement in film, were also among those receiving awards Monday night at the Georgia World Congress Center. <br> <br> Erving was recognized for special achievement in sports and Lee for excellence as a film director. <br> <br> Also honored were: Lt. Col. Marilyn Wills, heroism; Vernon Jordan, civil rights activism; and Thomas W. Dortch Jr., chairman of the 100 Black Men of America for leadership. <br> <br> The awards, started in 1993 by Turner Broadcasting System, will be broadcast Feb. 22 by TBS. The broadcast will be followed by a presentation of ``Get on the Bus,&#39;&#39; Lee&#39;s film about the 1995 Million Man March on Washington.
