Former Henry County teacher pleads guilty in theft

McDONOUGH - A former Henry County social studies teacher accused of stealing nearly $39,000 from the county affiliate of the Georgia Association of Educators has pleaded guilty. <br>

Jerome Amis, 47, was sentenced to three months in prison Wednesday after entering his plea. He was accused of taking $38,900 from the union treasury over a three-year period while he was association's local president. <br>
<br>
Accountants for the GAE noticed irregularities and referred them to the district attorney's office. <br>
<br>
Amis resigned from teaching and from his McDonough City Council post after his arrest in November. <br>
<br>
Amis had been a member of the McDonough City Council since 1986. He taught in the county school system for 24 years.
