New immigrant kids taught English in Hall County schools

By
GAINESVILLE - Hall County schools are teaching English to immigrant children through a new program called the Newcomers Academy.

The Academy gives intensive language instruction to students who have little or no grasp of the language.

It's been offered in five Hall County schools since November. Those are Lyman Hall, Jones, McEver, Myers, and Tadmore elementaries.

The program is open only to children who have started at U.S. schools since March. Students who score low on reading and language assessment tests qualify for language services.

School officials say the goal is to move students out of the program as soon as possible.

The program is funded by the federal No Child Left Behind Act -- passed by Congress in 2001.
