Sgt. Mark Rich shot Jayme Lamont Grate of Midway after he turned on the officer with a rifle, police said.
Officers shouted at Grate to drop his weapon before Rich fired, witnesses told the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Rich is on administrative leave with pay while the shooting is being investigated.
Grate was suspected of holding up clerks at a TA Travel Center near the motel and taking a ``substantial'' amount of cash.
A suspected accomplice, 19-year-old Thaddeus Antoine Miller of Midway, was arrested and charged with armed robbery.
GBI agents said police are investigating whether the same pair was involved in a similar robbery at the TA Travel Center on Dec. 21.
