Dawson mayor pleads guilty to DUI

DAWSON - Dawson Mayor Robert Albritten has pleaded guilty to drunken driving.

Albritten was re-elected by an overwhelming majority in the November election despite charges of fraud, forgery and DUI.

The 60-year-old Albritten entered the plea during a 15-minute hearing Friday.

Superior Court Judge Ronnie Joe Lane sentenced the mayor to 24 hours in jail, a year of probation, 40 hours of community service and ordered him to pay a $650 fine.

Police say Albritten recorded a blood alcohol level of .167 -- twice the legal limit -- after his van was involved in an October 20 accident in Dawson that sent a woman to the hospital.

He still faces trial on the fraud and forgery charges in Albany.

A Dougherty County grand jury indicted Albritten in August on 19 counts of insurance fraud and nine counts of forgery. The grand jury said Albritten, an insurance agent and funeral director, illegally purchased fraudulent life insurance policies on at least ten elderly and mentally infirm residents of an Albany assisted living home without their knowledge.

Albritten has declined comment on any of his legal problems.
