McFadden was skiing on an expert run when the accident occurred Saturday, said Jeff Hanle, ski resort spokesman.
Friends skiing with McFadden told mountain patrollers and emergency responders that he was an experienced skier. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. However, the victim experienced severe trauma to his torso, said Pitkin County Sheriff's Deputy George Kremer.
The accident was the first ski- or snowboard-related death in Aspen this season, and the fifth on Colorado slopes this season. Last season a record 14 accidental deaths were recorded.
