ATLANTA - Icy coolers of single beer bottles at gas stations would become illegal under a bill proposed Friday by a group of Atlanta Democrats.
The House bill would prevent gas stations from selling individual bottles of any malt beverage, which includes beer and wine coolers. Sponsors said the measure is intended to curb drinking and driving.
The ban would apply only to convenience stores where gas is sold. An industry group opposes the bill, calling it unnecessary.
The chances of the bill becoming law are unclear. All five sponsors in the House are freshmen legislators, who hold less power than veteran lawmakers.
The chairman of the committee likely to consider the bill, Representative Carl Von Epps, said he hadn't made up his mind on the proposal.
