MACON - Ruth Austin Knox was named president of Wesleyan College on Thursday, becoming the second woman and first alumna to get the job.
The board of trustees at Wesleyan, the Southeast's oldest liberal arts college for women, unanimously approved Knox's appointment.
Knox, 49, who has been acting president since May, inherits a projected $3.5 million debt this fiscal year due to poor investment returns, fewer donations and lower revenues.
``There can be no sugarcoating that fact,'' Knox said. ``We embrace our challenges; we do not fear them.''
Knox will leave behind an Atlanta law practice for the presidency at the 167-year-old private college.
Former President Nora Kizer Bell left last year to become president at Hollins University.
