ATLANTA - Former Atlanta Mayor Bill Campbell, who is still the focus of a lengthy federal investigation into City Hall corruption, is moving to Florida to join a law firm.
Campbell, 49, was Atlanta's mayor from 1994 to 2002. The move was announced Friday during his regular radio talk show on Atlanta station WAOK-AM. Campbell started the show last summer, several months after leaving office.
The station's vice president and general manager, Rick Caffey, said Campbell's last day on the air will probably be next Thursday or Friday.
Campbell is joining the law firm of Willie Gary, one of the best-known black litigators in the country. The firm is based in Stuart, Fla., north of West Palm Beach.
Gary is also the chairman of Shaw University's board, which recently considered Campbell for the presidency of the Raleigh, N.C., college. Campbell withdrew his name from consideration shortly before the board chose a career educator for the post.
The federal corruption probe has resulted in charges against 10 former city officials and city contractors. Campbell, who has not been charged in the probe, has accused investigators of targeting him because him because he is black.
