ATLANTA - About 270 Texaco gas stations in the Atlanta area are being renamed Shell. It's the third-largest market conversion since the companies began the effort two years ago.
The makeovers are part of an agreement that allowed the 2001 merger of Texaco and San Francisco-based Chevron to go forward.

The merger required White Plains, New York-based Texaco Corporation to divest some of its assets in the United States.

As a result, the yellow-and-red Shell logo is replacing the black-and-red Texaco stars at the majority of its 13,000 stations across the country.
Shell will spend about $530 million on the rebranding effort, which includes marketing and physical conversion costs. As part of the conversion, nearly 145,000 Texaco credit card holders in the Atlanta area will receive Shell credit cards.
The conversion of Atlanta stations is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
