HELENA - A 53-year-old woman and her two grandsons were killed Tuesday when a fire spread through their Telfair County home.
Barbara Everson, 14-year-old Stephen Stewart and 12-year-old Larry Stewart mostly likely died of smoke inhalation, according to state Insurance and Fire Safety Commissioner John Oxendine.
Investigators found several portable heaters plugged into one extension cord in the front bedroom, where the fire started. They also found no smoke detectors in the home.
Oxendine says the fire began shortly before 2:30 a.m. and probably started when the socket overloaded or when the heaters sparked something flammable.
