VALDOSTA - Authorities sought the cause of a wildfire Thursday after witnesses said something fell out of the sky before the blaze burned several acres of dense woods.
Checks with Valdosta Regional Airport, and Moody, Eglin and Tyndall Air Force Bases revealed no missing aircraft, Lowndes County Fire/Rescue Chief Jim Fielding said.
Firefighters combed the area on four-wheelers, but found no debris or other evidence of a downed plane. Helicopters from Moody circled the fire for more than half an hour.
The fire, which continued to burn within fire breaks late Thursday, was the second wildfire in two days in Lowndes County. On Wednesday, a lit cigarette was blamed for igniting a 25-acre fire.
