LOS ANGELES - California health officials say the state has received its first human case of the West Nile virus.
Preliminary tests on a Los Angeles County woman were positive for the virus, but conclusive results won't be known for another week.
The woman had not traveled outside the region, suggesting the possible infection occurred locally, a county health spokeswoman said.
The woman, who has recovered, became sick in August from meningitis, which is associated with the virus.
Human cases have been confirmed this year in 28 states and the District of Columbia.
