ATLANTA - The effort to eliminate the hours-long wait to renew a Georgia driver's licenses seems to be working.
More than 100,000 people avoided the state's most notoriously frustrating lines during the past two months by renewing their licenses by mail and over the Internet.
The new renewal system is part of a broader push by Governor Barnes and other state officials to improve licensing procedures.
If the current pace continues, about 500,000 people will renew their licenses by mail and Internet this year.

That's about one-fourth of the two million total renewals each year.
The phone-in appointment system, which started July 2001, saved another 55,000 people a wait.
In metro Atlanta's core counties, two new high-tech driver's licensing centers have shortened lines significantly. Two more centers will open soon, and the Department of Motor Vehicle Safety is expanding the appointment system for on-the-road license tests.
