MACON - Bibb County workers loaded $22,000 of household furnishings from Macon Mayor Jack Ellis' home Saturday to satisfy a lien against the house.
Robert Lovett, whose law firm represents Amal, a Macon boutique, said the store has a judgment against Ellis and his wife Margarethia for clothing and home items. The furnishings will be held in storage and could be sold to pay the lien.
In August, Ellis' then estranged wife was sued by the boutique's owner, Amal Gladin. Gladin claimed Ellis bought thousands of dollars in merchandise and didn't pay for it.
Gladin sought $21,938.82 for store items, interest, unspecified damages, court costs and legal fees.
Ellis said she did not realize she was being charged for the items and thought Gladin was providing her with clothing and household furnishings to attract business to her shop.
``I didn't want to go to the extent of them auctioning their property,'' Gladin said. ``(But) it's been two years, and they've been promising and promising to pay. It's my business or them.''
On Friday, a judged ordered the Ellises to move out of their house by 5 p.m. Sunday. Lovett also represents the couple who purchased the home from the Ellises in 2001 and went to court to remove Margarethia Ellis.
For more than a year, Margarethia Ellis has refused to move from the house even though she initially agreed to its sale.
Margarethia Ellis said she would not have sold the house if she had known her husband planned to file for divorce. They have since reconciled.
