ROME - A nine-year-old girl was in guarded condition in the intensive care unit at Floyd Medical Center Wednesday after being struck in the head by an arrow.
Authorities said Amy Willoughby had just walked out the back door of her home yesterday when a 26-inch wooden arrow from a neighbor's yard cut through a wooden fence and struck the side of her head.
The neighbor, ten-year-old Neal Brannon, was in his back yard shooting arrows at a ten-inch Styrofoam target. Sergeant Jerry Boyd of the Floyd County Police Department said the arrow apparently went through a crack in the privacy fence and into the Willoughbys' yard, lodging in the left side of the girl's head.
He called it a freak accident.
Police said the bow used by Brannon was capable of pulling a 50-pound tension.
