Georgia Southern begins its bid for a sixth consecutive Southern Conference football crown Saturday night, perhaps having to delve into a seldom-used offensive attack - the forward pass - to get by Wofford.

The Eagles (1-1) became a dominating team in Division I-AA primarily with a solid running game, but the Terriers seem to always have an exceptional defense against the run.

Wofford held I-AA rushing king Adrian Peterson to two of his lowest outputs - 106 yards his freshman year and 96 yards last season.

"We're definitely going to have to throw the ball against them," Southern coach Mike Sewak said.

The Wofford-Southern game is the feature attraction on Saturday's schedule that also sees Valdosta State and West Georgia begin Gulf South Conference action.

Valdosta State will entertain Delta State and West Georgia visits Southern Arkansas.

In games involving the state's other two Division I-AA teams, Morris Brown meets Clark Atlanta and Savannah State takes on perennial power South Carolina State in Savannah.

The slate for Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams has Kentucky State at Fort Valley and Morehouse at Benedict. Albany State has an open date.
