Man convicted of shooting girlfriend six times in head

ATHENS - A man who claimed he shot his girlfriend six times in the head in self-defense was convicted of murder Thursday. <br> <br> Wayne T. Welbon, 46, was found guilty in the September 2001 slaying of Judy Ann Harris. <br> <br> Welbon, whose sentencing was scheduled for Friday, testified that he was a passenger in Harris&#39; car when she became enraged and threatened to kill him. He said she reached behind the passenger seat to grab her own loaded gun from her purse. <br> <br> Welbon, who outweighed the 38-year-old Harris by more than 100 pounds, claimed he used his left arm to try to keep her from reaching for the gun while he unholstered his own gun with his right hand and fired. <br> <br> His effort to demonstrate to the jury was unconvincing. Welbon fumbled with one hand to pull the revolver from its holster and carrying case, then finally held the case down with one hand and pulled the gun with the other.
