ROSWELL - Three people tried to rob a pawn shop, but were stopped when the store owner, a former Fulton County sheriff's major, pulled a gun and shot one of them.
Two men, identified by police as 18-year-old Alvin Lucas of Conley and 23-year-old Jervier Allen of Atlanta, walked in Old Roswell Jewelry and Pawn around 5:45 p.m. Monday.

They demanded money and jewelry, and forced pawn shop owner Morris Chappell and his wife Rebecca into a back room.

``While in the back room, gunfire erupted and numerous shots were exchanged between the perpetrators and the owner,'' Roswell police Sgt. James McGee said.

Lucas was shot at least four times, and the pair ran to a getaway car, driven by 28-year-old Nadine Mortimer, also of Atlanta, police said. Chappell and his wife were not injured.

Police arrested all three at St. Joseph's Hospital of Atlanta. Lucas remained in the hospital Tuesday after surgery.

All three are charged with armed robbery and aggravated assault. They also will face child cruelty charges because a 15-month-old boy, believed to be Mortimer's child, was in the car during the robbery.
Chappell will not face charges, police said.
