VanGorder doing the job as UGA's defensive coordinator

By
ATHENS - Georgia defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder doesn't read newspapers often, and he doesn't listen to sports talk radio or read what's on the Internet.

This probably explains why he was unaware that his hiring in January 2001 was met mostly with ``Who's he?'' from fans and players alike.

Bulldog linebacker Boss Bailey admitted, ``I had never heard of him, to be honest with you.''

Part of the reason could be his background, which featured six seasons as defensive coordinator of mid-major schools such as Western Illinois, Central Michigan and Central Florida. Also, except for his three season stint at Central Florida, all of his college experience came in the Midwest, including three seasons as head coach at Division Two Wayne State in Detroit.

Regardless, VanGorder insists he was greeted warmly upon his arrival at Georgia, where he has the Number eight Bulldogs ranked in the top 25 in most major defensive categories.

Of the surprise at his hiring, VanGorder said, ``I never felt any of that. The people in the program and the fans have been great.''

Even Bailey has gotten to know him.

Bailey says, ``He's a great guy, man. He's real smart, and he's somebody that keeps us motivated.''
