ORLANDO, FLORIDA - AirTran Holdings Incorporated said Thursday its AirTran Airways unit plans to launch a regional jet operation, AirTran JetConnect, on November 15.
The Orlando, Florida-based low-fare carrier said AirTran JetConnect will be operated by privately held Air Wisconsin Airline Corporation and will fly 50-seat CRJ regional jets from AirTran's hub at Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport.
AirTran will initially fly between Atlanta and Greensboro, North Carolina; Pensacola, Florida; and Savannah, Georgia. All of these cities are currently served by AirTran Airways.
AirTran believes the regional jet operation will allow it to expand into other short-haul markets and to increase service in underserved markets.
AirTran believes the regional carrier will allow the company to use more of its fleet of Boeing 717 jets to increase frequencies in longer haul, more profitable markets and facilitate growth in larger markets it doesn't currently serve.
