PLAINS - Former President Jimmy Carter, the nation's most famous peanut farmer, will be inducted into the Peanut Hall of Fame during a festival Saturday in his hometown of Plains.
Induction into the Georgia Peanut Commission's Hall of Fame is the highest honor anyone can receive from the state's five thousand peanut farmers.
Since its inception 22 years ago, only three others have been inducted: University of Georgia peanut expert J. Frank McGill, late U.S. Senator Herman Talmadge and former state Representative Henry Reaves.
Georgia is the nation's largest peanut producer, providing 40 to 45 percent of the nation's domestic supply. Peanuts, a $400 million crop, are among the state's top row crops.
The induction ceremony will take place during a luncheon at the University of Georgia's Southwest Branch Experiment Station in conjunction with the Plains Peanut Festival.
