The Muleriders (2-2, 1-1 Gulf South Conference) had bolted to an early 10-0 lead and led 16-14 midway through the third before VSU (4-0, 2-0) struck for the next 10 points on a 4-yard touchdown pass from Faulkner to Lee Tarpley and a 24-yard field goal by Will Rhody. <br>

Faulkner completed 35 of 48 passes for 328 yards, while Southern's Ted Williams hit on 13 of 34 for 285 yards and two scores, including a 29-yarderto Nix Lewis that cut the lead to 24-22 early in the fourth quarter. <br>
