Virginia rallies to beat Wake Forest

By
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Matt Schaub said he felt confident Virginia could have some success against Wake Forest, even when his team trailed 27-10 at halftime Saturday.

He was right, and he helped lead the way by throwing for 312 yards and three touchdowns as Virginia rallied to beat Wake Forest 38-34.

``To come back from a deficit of 17 points really shows how much we were fighting and how much of a team we are,'' Schaub said. ``We were hurting ourselves with some penalties, and they were getting some big plays on offense. We just had to stick with our game plan and get back to what we came into the game trying to do.''

Heath Miller and Ryan Sawyer each caught two touchdown passes for the Cavaliers (3-2, 1-1 ACC).

Chris Barclay, Ovie Mughelli and Cornelius Birgs all scored first-half touchdowns for Wake Forest (2-3, 0-2) as the Demon Deacons dominated and led 27-10.

Schaub hooked up with Sawyer for a 33-yard touchdown pass with 4:54 left in the second quarter for Virginia's only touchdown of the first half.

Wali Lundy also helped the team with his arm, lobbing a pass that was deflected by a Deacon defender and then landed in the hands of Ryan Sawyer, who ran in for a 38-yard score.

``I definitely thought it was changing then,'' Schaub said. ``When we threw that pass, to see that go into the end zone... Ryan was Johnny on the spot right there. And I thought we had a little luck on our side right there.''

Virginia cut the lead to 34-31 in the fourth quarter, then took the lead for good on Marques Hagans' 13-yard touchdown run with 6:13 left. The score capped a 10-play, 78-yard drive.

``The team has a lot to be proud of,'' Coach Al Groh of Virginia said. ``They stuck together. There were amazing jobs by the defense and the offense.''

Mughelli scored Wake Forest's only second-half touchdown on a 3-yard run with 7:36 left in the third.

``We didn't make plays,'' Coach Jim Grobe of Wake Forest said. ``You don't win football games by hoping and wishing. You have to make plays. I just never felt comfortable the whole night. We weren't good enough tonight.''
