Sermon titles posted on church too explicit, some say

MARIETTA - Some parents in east Cobb County are complaining about the suggestive sermon titles on the red-brick sign of the 6,000-member Johnson Ferry Baptist Church.
``Tough Love in Dealing with Raunchy Sex'' is the topic Sunday where the Rev. Bryant Wright is preaching a series of sermons dealing with ``tough contemporary issues.''

``I hope every title creates interest in the community,'' said Wright, known for his ``Right From the Heart'' radio and television devotionals. ``But some of my sermon titles are duller than others.''

But Stacy Walker, a mother of three, has a different impression.

``They're using sex to sell God,'' says Walker, the parishioner at St. Ann's Catholic Church.

Church receptionists said they've had about 30 calls of complaint about the sign, almost all from nonmembers.

Walker said she knows of other people who've sent e-mails criticizing the signs, including her 8-year-old daughter Madeline, who wrote, ``I was thinking about the sign and I do not like it. Jesus maybe is confused, too.''

Wright said he's just trying to give people a different perspective from the one they get in pop culture with sermons with titles such as ``Mixing Jesus with Sex in the City,'' a reference to the HBO series.

Roberta Brunet, a third-grade teacher and member of Mount Bethel United Methodist Church, said she's concerned about the older children who might misinterpret Wright's intentions.

``School buses go by it every day,'' she said. ``This is not something that needs to be put in the public eye, especially from a church.''

Some of Wright's Johnson Ferry flock said they're pleased with his series.
Becky Lamp'l, a mother of two young children, said she thinks it's great.

``People have such a misconception of the Baptists. They think we're all button-up, we don't dance and we certainly don't have sex,'' Lamp'l said. ``God wants us to have sex with our married partner. It's supposed to be good in that context.''
