Plutonium on the way to Savannah River Site

By
COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA - Federal officials will not say if plutonium shipped to the Savannah River Site from Colorado has made it to the former nuclear weapons plant in South Carolina.

The shipments of the nuclear material left the Rocky Flats site more than two weeks ago.

Members of the Bush administration say they can't talk about the shipments because of security concerns. Staffers for U.S. Senator Fritz Hollings and representatives for U.S. Representatives Lindsey Graham and John Spratt also told The (Columbia) State they can't talk because of security concerns.

About six metric tons of plutonium are to be sent from Rocky Flats to SRS during the next 18 months.

The weapons-grade material is being trucked in heavily guarded tractor-trailers. Armed federal agents accompany the large trucks. Because the material could be used by terrorists to make nuclear weapons or cause an atomic accident, convoy movements also are being tracked from a national communications center in New Mexico.
