Chatham County clerk ordered off the job because of hairstyle

SAVANNAH - A court clerk has been ordered off the job for violating Chatham County&#39;s newly written personal grooming policy. <br> <br> Inger Bostick, a 13-year-employee in the Clerk of Superior Court&#39;s office, got notice July 22nd that she had to go home because her hairstyle -- short twists all over her head -- was not allowed under the new grooming rules, which had been implemented that day. <br> <br> Bostick said, ``All of a sudden, it was no longer professional.&#39;&#39; <br> <br> Bostick has vowed not to change her hair and to fight the county&#39;s action. <br> <br> Clerk of Superior Court Susan Prouse said Bostick has not been suspended or fired. Paid vacation is now being used to cover her absence, but Bostick said she wants to be working, not on vacation. <br> <br> Critics of the policy -- which also requires women to wear pantyhose, prohibits hats and scarves and set guidelines on the length and style of men&#39;s hair and facial hair -- say it unfairly targets blacks. <br> <br> Prouse said the dress code is based on the one in effect at Chatham County Police and that it does not discriminate based on race.
