FORT BENNING - An autopsy indicated that a 17-year-old Army recruit who died after a 1-mile run had an enlarged heart, Army officials said.
The condition, technically known as a ``concentric left ventricular hypertrophy,'' likely led to Monday's death of Pfc. Nicholas O. Williams, of Pinehurst, Ga., Fort Benning spokesman Rich McDowell said Wednesday.
Williams, who graduated from Dooly County High School with honors less than two months ago, had been at Fort Benning only a week and was undergoing a physical fitness assessment test while awaiting assignment to a basic training battalion.
He complained of dizziness about 6 a.m. Monday and died two hours later at Martin Army Community Hospital.
The Army requires recruits to have physical examinations and medical screening, but Williams' heart problem could not have been detected without specific tests, McDowell said.
Williams was the second soldier to die during training within a month at Fort Benning. Second Lt. Zachariah R. Miller, a 22-year-old Rhodes scholar, died July 1 during a solo land-navigation exercise.
