FARMINGTON, N.M. - The Marietta East Cobb Yankees defeated the Grand Rapids West Michigan Elite 5-0 Friday night in the opening game of the Connie Mack World Series. <br>

The Yankees started things off in the third inning when John Goodman hit a home run and Tyler Greene followed with a double. The Yankees were able to bring two home to take a 3-0 lead before the end of the inning. <br>

Grand Rapids was able to hold off Marietta in the fourth inning, but a double by Steven Blackwood in the fifth and a home run by Whit Robbins in the sixth spoiled any chance of a comeback. <br>

Jimmy Barthmaier held Michigan scoreless and gave up only three hits to earn the win. Mike Geddes took the loss for Grand Rapids.
