VIENNA - A man accused of robbing a business was shot by police before leading law enforcement officers on a high speed chase through Vienna. <br>

Nineteen-year-old Scott Allen Gaines of Cordele was listed in fair condition this afternoon at Crisp Regional Medical Center. The unidentified officer was not injured. <br>

Gaines was arrested Wednesday afternoon in the parking lot of Dooly County High School shortly after the shooting. The school, which was in session, was locked down and no one inside was injured. <br>

According to the police report, the officer had tried to arrest Gaines at a Vienna gas station shortly after the alleged robbery. <br>
<br>
Police said Gaines reached into his pants pocket before the officer could frisk him. The two men started wrestling. Officials believe Gaines was trying to get his gun when the officer fired two shots, striking Gaines in the stomach. <br>

Gaines then got back into his truck and left the gas station. <br>
<br>
The officer has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
