AUGUSTA - Three Augusta men have been charged with abducting a 19-year-old woman as she waited at a traffic light, raping her and then stealing her car.
Police said the young men chose the Aiken County, S.C., woman at random. They planned to steal a car and were impressed by the shiny, silver rims on the victim's black 2001 Honda Civic, police said.
The woman was going to see her boyfriend, who lives in Augusta, when she was abducted late Wednesday. A man with a gun approached her car, and the other two followed in another car.
``It just sends chills down your spine that you could be riding down the highway, not in your own neighborhood, and someone abducts you,'' Richmond County sheriff's Maj. Ken Autry said. ``It's terrible.''
Ollie Dwayne Jones, 20; Marquis S. Williams, 18; and Bobby Jermaine Ricks, 17, were charged Thursday with kidnapping and sexual assault.
After the rape, the men decided to rob the woman, taking her to an ATM, police said. When the woman could not withdraw any money, the men took the Honda and left her stranded.
She ran to a nearby home and called police. She was taken to an Aiken, S.C., hospital.
Police said the suspects also were charged Thursday with the Aug. 2 carjacking of an Augusta resident who was using a pay telephone. Jones was being held in Aiken County Jail; Williams and Ricks were in jail in Richmond County.
Aiken County (S.C.) sheriff's Capt. Michael Frank said the attack was extremely rare because most victims of sexual assault know their attacker.
``This case is the first that I've seen in a long time where it truly was a case of a random attack where the victim and her attackers were total strangers,'' Frank said.
