22-year-old James Creamer traveled to his hometown of McRae after he was released from a transition program for homeless military veterans at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers in Augusta.
McRae Police Chief Ken Wilcox says Creamer got a gun from his father's house and then went to his mother's house.
Wilcox says he began shooting randomly and hit his brother-in-law Cecil Vaughn 15 times.
Wilcox says Creamer also beat his mother after chasing her around the house and attacked his wife before leaving.
He has been charged with assault in those cases.
