Robert James Pung, 21, pleaded innocent Tuesday to one count each of ethnic intimidation and assault and battery. After his arraignment in Ionia County District Court, he was taken to the county jail, where he was still being held Wednesday.
The ethnic intimidation charge is a felony that carries a maximum possible sentence of two years in prison and a $5,000 fine. The assault charge is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 93 days in jail and a $500 fine.
Duckett, who is black, told investigators that he was attacked July 23 by at least two white men after a concert by rapper Nelly at the Greater Ionia Fair. The former Michigan State University football star said he lost a tooth after being pushed and struck in the face with a bottle.
Ionia County Prosecutor Gail Benda said Pung was previously convicted of assault with a dangerous weapon, criminal sexual conduct with a girl between the age of 13 and 15, operating a vehicle while impaired and driving while impaired.
Court-appointed attorney Robert Sykes was assigned to defend Pung.

Pung's pretrial hearing was scheduled for Monday and a preliminary examination was set for the following day, the Sentinel-Standard reported.
Police had not yet apprehended the second defendant, Harold Jason Bodman. Ionia County Sheriff Dwain Dennis said he believed Bodman, 23, was still in the area.
Both men are Ionia County residents.
Bodman is charged with one count each of ethnic intimidation and assault with a dangerous weapon. His assault charge is a felony that carries a maximum possible sentence of four years in prison and a $2,000 fine.
Authorities allege that Bodman struck Duckett with the bottle.
