LAWRENCEVILLE - A Norcross police officer was justified in returning fire and wounding a man who shot his partner as the officers tried to evict him from a motel, Gwinnett County police said Wednesday.
The investigation into the June 23 shooting was forwarded to the Gwinnett County district attorney's office for review.
Witness statements and evidence indicated that Officer Dione Hodges did nothing wrong in shooting 46-year-old Martin James Logan.
Logan faces aggravated assault charges for shooting 32-year-old police Cpl. Mark Clarence Gibbs in the head.
Gibbs was in a coma for two weeks and is currently in a physical rehabilitation facility. Officials said Gibbs is progressing well, but is still a long way from full recovery.
Logan, who was shot in the chest and head, is still hospitalized.
Employees said Logan had been fired from his position as assistant manager at the Villager Lodge Motel in suburban Atlanta before the shooting there. Police say Logan opened the door of his room and began firing on the officers.
