A spokesman said Thursday Maddox is in the intensive care unit of Northside Hospital, where he is recovering from two operations. Maddox - who served as governor from 1967 to 1971 - was admitted to the hospital July 27th.
He had surgery that night to remove a section of his colon and later had a second operation Wednesday night.
The 86-year-old Maddox is suffering from a variety of ailments, including cancer and heart disease.
Maddox gained notoriety nationwide after chasing away blacks from his Atlanta restaurant in the 1960s.
He was elected governor by the Legislature in 1966 when no candidate won a majority in the general election. He served one term and then was lieutenant governor under Jimmy Carter.
Georgia's oldest living former governor lives in Cobb County. Doctors diagnosed prostate cancer in late 1983, and he had surgery in March 1997 for an intestinal blockage. That fall, doctors operated to remove cancer from his ear lobe and canal.
