DULUTH - A Duluth police officer was recovering and her alleged shooter is dead after what began as a domestic dispute escalated into a gunbattle in a quiet Gwinnett County subdivision.
It was not known Thursday night whether Roman Khaimov, 38, was killed by police or if he shot himself.

Police said Khaimov, 38, and his estranged wife, Inna Savinova, got into a quarrel Thursday afternoon in the W.P. Jones Park in Duluth. Khaimov pulled a 9 mm handgun and fired at Savinova as she tried to drive away.

Savinova was cut by flying glass from her car's windshield. Khaimov ran to his house in the nearby Grove Park subdivision, barricading himself in shortly after 3 p.m.
The first officers at the scene exchanged fire with Khaimov for at least 30 minutes. Duluth officer Jill Manders, 28, was shot in the hip and thigh, Gwinnett Police spokesman Ray Dunlap said. Neither of the wounds was believed to be life-threatening.
Grove Park was sealed off for two hours and was ``absolutely a war zone,'' Duluth Police Chief Randy Belcher said. Khaimov was firing at police from his back door, garage and an upstairs bedroom.
A police robot, sent into the home on Benthollow Lane about 5:30 p.m., confirmed that Khaimov was dead.
``It was like an O.K. Corral thing,'' Grove Park resident Mark Farmer told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. ``The gunshots were whizzing everywhere. I couldn't believe it.''
