ATLANTA - An Emory University professor who's being investigated for academic fraud was placed on paid leave for the fall semester.
In 2000, Michael Bellesiles wrote ``Arming America: The Origins of a National Gun Culture,'' which received national attention for its contention that early Americans did not own or use firearms in great numbers.
The book stirred fierce criticism from gun-rights advocates, and scholars suggested that Bellesiles made serious errors, prompting Emory to launch an investigation in February.
Two months later, the school handed over the inquiry to an external committee.
Emory spokeswoman Jan Gleason would not comment on what punishment Bellesiles faces if the charges are proven.
